THE LITTLE MATCH GIRL PASSION

Oct 15 (Sat) 2016 | 7:30pm | St. Andrew’s Church

I don’t think I’ve ever been so moved by a new […] composition as I was by David Lang’s little match girl passion, which is unlike any music I know.’ — Tim Page, Pulitzer Prize Juror

Winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize, David Lang’s astonishing and haunting the little match girl passion sets Hans Christian Andersen’s fable in the form of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. In Lang’s own words, ‘the suffering of the Little Match Girl has been substituted for Jesus’, elevating […] her sorrow to a higher plane’.

Tallis Vocalis will premiere the choral version of the work in Hong Kong as the centerpiece of an exquisite Passion-themed programme conducted by Chris Watson (Theatre of Voices, The Tallis Scholars). Other works in the programme include music by Palestrina and Gallus.
